Kölner Fond is a revolutionary water-based burnishing clay that combines traditional gesso and bole into one easy-to-use product, streamlining the classic water gilding process. Simply stir and apply straight from the bottle — no heating or mixing required. By brushing on multiple layers (four or more recommended) and polishing the final coat, you can achieve an ultra-smooth, mirror-like base ready for gilding.
Once polished, activate the surface with Kolner Colnasol to create the perfect foundation for genuine metal leaf, producing a lustre and brilliance that rivals traditional water gilding. For best results, avoid shaking, ensure a dry film thickness of at least 150 µm, and note that it’s designed exclusively for genuine metal leaf — not imitation or Dutch metal.
