Kölner makes a range of products designed for just this purpse. The Caselo paints are useful, particularly for modern framers, for creating a vivid base colour to go under gilding. Fond and Poliment are more traditional products intended for water gilding, the Kölner Fond is ready-mixed bole in a pot and the Poliment is a more traditional coloured clay that you can add to your own bole mixtures!
