French Chalk
Alternatively known as 'talc' or 'talcum' this very fine white powder is traditionally used a ground for gesso, giving it an ultra-white colour. It is also used in book-binding, when edge gilding the leaves of the book have french chalk sprinkled over them to prevent them sticking together when pressed to each other.
