Shellac is a natural resin harvested from the secretions of female lac bugs left behind on trees. It has long been used for all sorts of applications, including as a protective top coat and isolating varnish.
Shellac flakes can be dissolved in alcohol to create a polish that has long been prized by woodworkers, painters and gilders.
The flakes are available in a range of colours based on the amount of dye remaining in the shellac after processing. Clear de-waxed shellac is the lightest, ranging to our darkest, which is the button shellac.
Note: Shellac flakes should be stored in a cool, dry place out of the sunlight to keep them fresh for longer.
