Gum Ammoniac is a natural gum size derived from dried tree sap and processed using a traditional recipe, making it a time-honored choice for fine gilding work. With a smooth, flowing consistency, it can be easily applied using a dip pen or brush, allowing for precise, controlled detailing. This makes it particularly well-suited for small-scale gilding, intricate calligraphy, and delicate embellishments on paper and parchment.
For very fine work or absorbent surfaces, two applications may be needed to ensure an optimal tack for gold leaf adhesion. While Gum Ammoniac can be built up to create slight raised effects, it does not achieve the same level of height as gesso or Improved Gold Body. However, its natural composition and ease of use make it an excellent option for achieving elegant, traditional gilding results.
Once applied and left to dry the gum can be reactivated by breathing onto it before pressing the gold down onto the tacky gum. Allow at least five minutes before burnishing and do not burnish directly onto the leaf, instead use glassine paper between the gold and the agate burnisher. You should find that using gum ammoniac as a size allows for a brighter burnished finish than the Ormoline Gilding Medium or Water Gold Size.
Important: Gum Ammoniac sets hard, quickly; so if you don't want to ruin your pen or brush immediately wash them in hot water after use!
