Traditional Gesso Preparation - ready to use to seal surfaces prior to gold or metal leafing or as a glue to join broken pieces of old gesso or plaster. Can be used to repair brittle frames.
This gesso has been formulated to traditional recipes using rabbit skin glue and whiting and can be used as a replacement for homemade gesso. To use simply warm the gesso in a bain marie until it is warm and fluid then apply successive coats with a brush until the desired level is achieved. Each coat can be applied as soon as the previous one is cold. After a few hours the gesso will set hard and can then be smoothed with a very fine abrasive. You can repeatedly reheat the gesso but after reheating around four times it will start to break down - we recommend only heating up enough gesso to use as needed.
When laying metal/gold leaf onto gesso first wet the gesso to reactivate it's adhesive properties before applying the leaf.
