Gilding Size - Oil Based
Oil-based gold size can be used for both indoor and outdoor gilding. It is the only size recommend for exterior applications as water-based sizes will break down when exposed to moisture. It will give a glossier appearance to the leaf compared to pieces gilded with acrylic gold size. When using oil gold size particular care must be taken to watch the "tack" time and "open" times when gilding. Each product is sold with a particular tack time but please bear in mind these are only rough guidelines as there are many factors that can increase or decrease drying times, such as heat, humidity, etc.
Oil-based gold size will adhere to a wide variety of surfaces, including glass, stone and metal, but all surfaces must either be non-porous or sealed prior to application of the size.
