Burnishing Tools

When undertaking water gilding projects, agate burnishers are used to create a highly polished mirror-like surface. The agate is set into a metal ferrule and mounted on a thick wooden handle. The Agate stones are shaped differently , some are hooked, some flat and some convex to suit the shape of the surface being burnished. It is important not to burnish if there is any dampness in the gesso or the agate will tear the surface.
